Mamta Banerjee’s Childhood and Family

Mamta was born in a Bangali Brahmin Family on 5 January, 1955 in Kolkata, West Bangal. Her father Promileswar Banerjee and mother Gayetri Devi are also bengali. When Mamta was only 17 years old, her father died due to lack of medical treatment. Mamta completed her 12th board examination from Deshbandhu Sishu Sikshalay in 1970. She Graduated with an honors degree in history from the Jogamaya Devi College. Later, she did Masters Degree in Islamic History from the University of Culcutta. She also got degree in education from the Shri Shikshayatan College. She earned a law degree from the Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College, Kolkata. She was honoured with a Doctor of Letters from Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology.

Mamta Banerjee’s Political Journey and Career

Mamta’s political journey is too long, So we will see it one by one in short.

  • She began her political career by joining Indian National Congress in 1970. Since she was so young, her rank rose fast in local politics and she remained the general secretary of Mahila Congress(1), from 1976 to 1980. In 1984 general election, she created a history and became one of the India’s youngest parliamentarians ever, defeating veteran Communist politician Somnath Chatterjee. There was many ups and down and in year 1997 Mamta left the Indian National Congress.
  • After leaving Indian National Congress, She created a new political party  All India Trinamool Congress. Soon it became the main opposition party to the  Communist government in the state.
  • In year 1999, she joined  BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government and became the Railways Ministry.
  • After becoming railway minister, she introduced her first railway budget in year 2002. She introduced 4 new express trains in West Bengal. and many more trains. She also focused on to improve tourism.
  • She left NDA in 2001 and allied with Congress Party for 2001 elections in west bengal. In 2004, she joined with NDA and she was only one to win seat in west bengal from All India Trinamool Party. And she become coal and Mine Minister.
  • In 2009 parliamentary elections, Mamta forged an alliance with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) led by Indian National Congress.
